Alabama community foundations meet face-to-face to report on needs, plan next steps for statewide recovery fund

May 19, 2011

The key players in the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund gathered May 19 at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham for the first time face to face since this fund for long-term statewide recovery was created on April 29. The creation of the fund came just two days after devastating tornadoes cut a wide path across Alabama and a major gift of $100,000 was made by Medical Properties Trust just five days later.

Fundraising continues for what will surely be a long process of helping communities across our state rebuild. Today’s meeting was the first step in planning how to make sure people receive as much help as possible, especially in long-term needs after the emergency phase ends.

This kind of teamwork shows the strength of community foundations in serving their specific geographic area, as well as stretching to make sure all areas are covered. We’re proud to hold and administer the funds and hope it keeps growing and growing, because needs are great!

We all have many ways to give, now and over the long term. It’s good to know that the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund is working well as one option for statewide support.
