Nonprofits and fundraisers provide ways to help after tornado

April 29, 2011

The nonprofit organizations serving the community of Greater Birmingham are already at work, each using their special expertise to reach out to help people in the wake of the tornado. Red Cross and Salvation Army still provide opportunities to give and Hands On Birmingham is organizing volunteers.

In addition, here are some of the opportunities we have heard about.
Greater Birmingham Ministries is asking for donations of new and used clothing to assist tornado victims, particularly new socks and underwear (all sizes). They also can use volunteers on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at their location, 2304 12the Avenue North, where they will share food and fellowship and distribute clothing and food to people and families in need.
Community Furniture Bank is gearing up to offer assistance in providing household goods. They expect to need donations of dollars, particularly to offset fuel costs, as well as donated items. Volunteers may be needed, especially during the week of May 23 when donations from Samford University were already expected. The organization’s open house and fundraiser is already set for 2 to 4 p.m. on May 15 at the Distribution Center Complex on West Oxmoor Road.

Junior League of Birmingham is using its Bargain Carousel this weekend to help, first by limiting appliance purchases to two (2) per person so that more people can benefit. At the end of the sale, which raises funds for JLB to provide programs year-round, Bargain Carousel will donate all items to agencies serving storm victims. JLB also will accept donations at the sale this weekend and match those up to $20,000.

Special events:
Magic City Art Connection and Crawfish Boil are moving ahead for the weekend, but both offer opportunities to help, either through donations through participating artists or through accepting donations on site. Bob Sykes BBQ & Blues Festival will donate half of all ticket proceeds to Hands on Birmingham and is working to accept donations on site.
