Birmingham today a magnet for brains and tastebuds, too

February 18, 2011

Birmingham-Hoover made the top 10 in a recent Forbes Magazine survey of the top 50 metro areas for gains in college graduates. The survey used the latest data from the American Community Survey to compare gains between 2007 and 2009 among people with college educations in the population over 25 years of age. We were right behind four other Southern cities, with New Orleans in the Number 1 position.

The article cited the influence of the medical center at UAB, and that surely makes sense. Maybe these “brains” also are enjoying our great restaurants, led by four chefs who recently were recognized among the semifinalists recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Congratulations to Chris Dupont, Chris Hastings, Nick Pihakis and Frank Stitt and to the new “brain trust” of Birmingham.

Here’s the link to the Forbes article and to more about the James Beard awards.
