Season brings chances to help others

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out how best to help, how we can effectively reach out to families and children who need just a little something extra to make their holidays brighter.

We know the numbers are real: Almost 700,000 people living below the poverty level in Alabama, according to the 2000 census. That’s 16.1 percent compared to the national figure of 12.4 percent.

So how can each of us make an individual difference today? You have many choices within your personal networks, from religious institutions to nonprofit organizations including Greater Birmingham Ministries, Shelby Emergency Assistance and Hope House, three partners with your Community Foundation during recent efforts to provide additional financial help to keep people in their homes.
