UAB impact keeps growing, according to study

November 10, 2010

We have long recognized the power of UAB as the state’s largest employer and a symbol of our community’s transformation from its original manufacturing base. A new study shows the extent of that power, including an annual economic impact of $4.6 million in Alabama for 2009. This figure is up $1 billion over the past two years and is projected to reach $6.6 billion in 10 years if expected campus growth continues.

The study, released Nov. 9 and reported in Wednesday’s Birmingham News, also shows the power of investing in UAB’s success, as Blueprint Birmingham already has pointed out. We agree with the Birmingham Business Alliance on this emphasis and with Birmingham Mayor William Bell’s quoted promise to support growth at UAB. And we look forward to seeing what we can all accomplish together, benefiting from UAB as such a powerful economic engine.
