Earth Harp offers out-of-this-world musical experience

September 23, 2010

Again today at noon, 2 and 6 p.m., performers will produce amazing vibrations and an amazing musical experience outside in free concerts on the newly constructed Earth Harp at the Alys Stephens Center, just another one of our community’s great assets.

School children and adults alike have been enjoying the mini-concerts all week, as performers wearing rosin-covered, cotton gloves run their fingertips along the strings that stretch into the sky, attached to the edge of the ASC wall just off 10th Avenue South.

The technical explanation is that this action generates a longitudinal vibration along the string. As one performer explained, it works the way you can get a sound by running your fingers around the upper edge of a crystal glass. The tone on the Earth Harp is different and definitely something you want to hear.

A full performance of the MASS Ensemble Theatrical Rock Opera is set for Friday at 8 p.m. Find out more from the ASC.
