Market Day in North Birmingham today

September 1, 2010

A new month brings new opportunities for healthy eating, starting with North Birmingham Market Day from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 1. Spread the word and encourage others to join the crowds as we support Main Street Birmingham’s work to irrigate the food deserts of our community with good food.

This first Market Day is set for North Birmingham Shopping Plaza, 2600 31st Avenue North, right in front of the North Birmingham Police Precinct headquarters. It’s part of the Urban Food Project, an initiative of Main Street Birmingham that is supported in part by a grant from your Community Foundation. Other support comes from the Jefferson County Department of Public Health, Mayor’s Office and United Way of Central Alabama.

Click here to find out more about how the Urban Food Project is identifying the places within the city of Birmingham that lack access to healthy foods, called food deserts. Together, we are working to develop systems to improve that access. Public markets like this one are a great start, as well as a way to support local business.
