Earth Day makes us appreciate our community’s assets

April 22, 2010

Did you do your part for our environment by buying a plant at the spring plant sale last weekend, which raised more than $250,000 for the Birmingham Botanical Gardens? Are you planning to participate in one of many Earth Day celebrations this coming weekend, from cleaning up your neighborhood to enjoying half-price admission for selected hours at the Birmingham Zoo?

Are you celebrating the fact that the Freshwater Land Trust is getting a $200,000 brownfield grant that will be part of identifying and cleaning up problem areas along Village Creek That’s good news for local leaders who want to build trails and parks along the banks of this stream.

For these and so many other reasons, our community can be a proud part of Earth Day 2010. We have so many great assets, including three new and improved parks that make us a national leader in open space. And we are building so many more, thanks to people in our community who care about the outdoor assets we enjoy every day.
