Recession still hitting nonprofits hard, experts say

March 25, 2010

In a recent Reuters report, a panel of experts predicted nonprofit organizations would face even harder times in 2010 due to lag effect of the recession. We are seeing that too, with a record number of requests for funding received in our first competitive grant cycle (deadline March 15).

Like those national experts, we are seeing an increasing need for operating dollars (which we first began granting in 2009, in response to the economy). And we agree that some “gems” may be lost among the smallest nonprofits that contribute so much to the quality of life in our community.

Like other foundations, your Community Foundation is looking for secure, effective grant opportunities, so that what we invest can make the most difference. We are fortunate in our partnerships with many donors, especially individuals, families and businesses who have established Donor Advised Funds with us. With their help, we were able to provide an additional $500,000 in grants to area nonprofits in 2009, and we expect these generous folks to step up again to meet increasing needs.

As one expert commented, the nonprofit sector may be last to go over the cliff, but may linger there even as other parts of the economy recover. Your Community Foundation and all our generous donors will be working hard in the coming months to make sure these important nonprofit partners don’t fall off completely.
