$13 million helps people get active, get healthy

March 23, 2010

As we count down 50 Ways to Love our Community, it’s exciting that Way #10 involves a $13 million investment to build on efforts already under way to make our community a healthier place to live. Congratulations to the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership, led by the Jefferson County Department of Health with your Community Foundation as a key partner, and good luck as so many great partner agencies start investing federal dollars to improve nutrition and physical activity and fight tobacco use.

Jefferson County is one of seven communities nationwide to win grants under two parts of the initiative called Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW). As part of the stimulus package, a total of $372.8 million is being invested in 44 communities across the country to prevent chronic diseases, reduce costs associated with health care and make people and communities stronger.

Click here for more details about how dollars will be invested in Jefferson County, where $6.3 million for obesity work will include a greenway master plan, neighborhood walking groups and healthier food options for local schools. Another $7 million will use radio dramas and media campaigns as part of the strategy to fight tobacco use.
