Health Action Partnership announcement Friday

March 18, 2010

If you are reading this post after noon on Friday, be sure to check local media for the full story, because as this is written, we are under a strict embargo about what we can say. Whenever you read it, before or after the national announcement, you can be proud that the Health Action Partnership of the Jefferson County Department of Health is leading such a strong local effort to make our community a healthier place to live for everyone.

That is an important priority for your Community Foundation too, as you can see if you look at our grants and initiatives. We also serve as a key partner in the great work of the Health Action Partnership, which recently received a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (plus $80,000 from your Community Foundation and $20,000 from JCDH).

Join us on Friday, March 19, at 1 p.m. for a press conference and at 1:30 p.m. for a reception following a national announcement by First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about prevention and wellness grant awards to communities around the country. In our convening and catalyst role, we have been a big part of the announcement that will be made at the Eastern Health Center of the Jefferson County Health Department, 601 West Boulevard near the Roebuck Municipal Golf Course.

The official press advisory says the announcement will involve “national, state and local efforts to prevent obesity and tobacco use while improving nutrition and increasing physical activity among the people of Jefferson County.” Right now, that is all we can say, but be sure to watch for coverage, even if you cannot join us on Friday.
