Girl Scouts do more than sell cookies

February 23, 2010

Mmmmm. The taste of a Thin Mint Girl Scout cookie is unmistakable. Did you know that we bought more than 1.4 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies from thousands of Girl Scouts in the North-Central Alabama Council last year?

With the 2010 cookie sale set to end in just a couple of weeks, it seems the right time to think about all the opportunities for area girls that are supported by selling those cookies. This is a special kind of workforce development, because the girls gain dollars for travel and other activities, while they expand their skills as money managers and future leaders.

Today’s Brownies may learn about how water filtration works or study financial literacy. By pursuing the highest level awards, Girl Scouts like Chelsea’s Hanna Cree gain additional opportunities to serve their communities. All in all, some 19,000 young people participate in troops and other programs across a 36-county area, the Girl Scouts of the North-Central Alabama Council. Each of those represents a great reason to celebrate another reason to love our community, today and in the future where today’s Girl Scouts will be our newest leaders.
