$2.1 million adds to $200 million grant total

December 29, 2009

It’s hard to know exactly what inspired our very first donors, Mervyn and Dorah Sterne, when their Advised Fund made possible the first grant from our Community Foundation . Today, 50 years later, we know that their $100 grant to Fairhaven Methodist Retirement Home was the start of made more than $200 million in grants from more than 350 different kinds of grantmaking funds.

In 2009, we added another $2.1 million in grants from Community Funds to that total, plus at least $10 million more so far from Advised Funds, like the one the Sternes established; Scholarship Funds, assisting more than 100 students; Agency Endowmen and Designated Funds, providing on-going support to one or more nonprofit organizations. We are waiting to make our first investment from our new Community Catalyst Funds, the latest way that people who care about the community can be involved in transforming it for future generations.

Where does all the money go? You can click here to see a list of the $1.1 million in grants awarded from Community Funds in December 2009 to 63 nonprofit organizations in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker counties.
