Take a new look at Red Mountain Park

October 26, 2009

More than 150 hikers came out on Oct. 18 for the first opportunity this fall to explore new trails and historic structures at Red Mountain Park. What a great day it was to be outdoors and to see more of the 1,200-acre property that is not yet officially open to the public.

With plans for a 20-acre lake, a 6.8-mile loop trail and much more, there is plenty to look forward to as well as much to enjoy right now with park tours planned for every third Sunday each month through April. You can also check out a new Red Mountain Park website, once the home of the Friends of Red Mountain Park. As of last week, the Friends group set up a separate site, so both are now available as great connections to the park.

Look for efforts to move ahead on raising funds to complete all the great park plans. Startup dollars were raised through the Three Parks Initiative, led by Region 2020 and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, and are still coming in as businesses and foundations fulfill their pledges.

See you at the next hike on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m., starting at Frankfurt Drive off Lakeshore Drive.
