Women’s Fund moves women forward to financial literacy

October 13, 2009

As the front page article in The Birmingham News explained so well on Monday, Oct. 12, The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham is taking aim at an issue that affects so many women and their families — the issue of financial stability.

Virginia Sweet of The Women’s Fund explained that women are the face of poverty around the world and especially in Alabama, where so many already live below the poverty line. So teaching women how to save, budget and plan for their own financial future is even more crucial.

With Voices Against Violence, the successful initiative that has won national attention for its efforts to reduce the numbers of domestic violence assaults in greater Birmingham, The Women’s Fund organized a giving circle of women lawyers to raise the money needed for strategic grants. A separate giving circle of local women will help in raising funds for the financial literacy initiative and determining where grants will be most effective.

To find out more about the Voices Against Violence celebration on Oct. 15 or the financial literacy giving circle, contact Virginia Sweet or check out The Women’s Fund website. And check out 50 Ways to Love Your Community, which features the successes of Voices Against Violence and the reasons why the members of this giving circle are involved in this important work.
