Tips for giving more in tough times: Make a plan

September 10, 2009

If you can’t give more, can you give smarter?

First, make a plan. That’s what you would do with your household budget, right? So do it for charity too.

Ask your spouse and your kids what matters most to them and figure out a way to set aside a portion of your resources so you can give to the things you care about. Just knowing that you have a plan will make it easier to say no to causes that may sound good but don’t really focus on the things you believe are most important.

And leave a little something extra for the unexpected — a local tragedy or natural disaster that you cannot predict but want to give to. When Hurricane Katrina forced survivors to Birmingham and other cities, our community dug deep and helped, while still giving to the other causes they cared about.

That’s our first tip for giving more in tough times. Look for more later this week.
