Museum takes you to China, Japan — and it’s free

August 25, 2009

Are you a secret warrior? Check out the Samurai swords and armor at our very own Birmingham Museum of Art and you’ll see a collection that is nationally known for excellence.

Or come and touch the 250-pound block of jade that gives you a sense of the beauty that has fascinated so many through the ages. That opportunity awaits you right now — and it doesn’t cost a thing, as part of the permanent collection now on display at the Museum’s newly reopened Asian Art Gallery.

Yes, there’s much more there than just the cultural and artistic icons of the Orient. This weekend, a new African American gallery opens. The permanent collection also includes an internationally known collection of Wedgwood, displayed in every form from a tiny cup to a majestic mantlepiece.

If you’ve been to Art on the Rocks this summer and to any of the other great events at the Museum all year round, you may already know the great things on display right in downtown Birmingham. But one visit is not near enough to explore everything, especially with new galleries and new exhibits opening all the time.

You never know where you will go or what you will see, and it’s all free. Find out more in this week’s edition of 50 Ways to Love Your Community.
