Choo-choo, make way for the 5K run

August 14, 2009

We can’t wait for Railroad Park to officially open. Behind those chain link fences, great things are shaping up for our community.

But we don’t have to wait to have fun, thanks to a 5K race that starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 21 at Railroad Park and takes you through the streets of downtown Birmingham to a festive finish at Sloss Furnaces. Sign up now to be part of the first-ever Choo-Choo Chug-a-Lug 5K Run, Railroad Park to Sloss Furnaces.

The prizes are cool — hand-poured in iron from Sloss — but even if you don’t win you get two free drink tickets and free entry to Stokin’ the Fire BBQ and Music Festival at Sloss Furnaces that night. And the first 300 runners to register get a free shirt.

Park at Sloss Furnaces at Twenty-32nd St. N. and we’ll shuttle you to the starting point at Railroad Park on 1st Avenue South. More info is available at the Trak Shak or from Railroad Park.

Park at Sloss Furnaces (20 32nd Street North under the viaduct) and take the shuttle over to the race start. If you can’t run that far but want to volunteer, here’s the e-mail address to get involved.

And next year, maybe it will be time to run the other way, ending up at the great new city park and event space at Railroad Park.
