Kathy Kemp says get involved & you can help

August 12, 2009

“Get involved.” That’s good advice from Birmingham News columnist Kathy Kemp, who invited readers on August 11 to look for creative ways to share their time in support of our community.

It doesn’t have to cost you anything but time, she suggests, since you can support arts and culture by attending free lunchtime lectures at the Birmingham Public Library or learn about your community at free gatherings sponsored by Catalyst.

And you can contact the Community Foundation, where, as Jan Bell told Kathy, we love to help people find a way to follow their passion. Tell us what you care about and we’ll help you to find an organization that will match that interest.

And keep giving us your input on this blog. That costs nothing and can benefit everyone, as we work together to transform our community.

Went to meet a woman to discuss event venue for our Gala. Amazing–before we got to her sales pitch, it became a discussion about volunteer opportunities for this single Mom who, despite having a 2 year old, feels she can make a difference… but needs to be able to bring her child along at times. We shelter homeless women and children. She wants to become a mentor for one of our ladies in permanenet supportive housing. Obviously, we will do our homework to make a proper match if this appears to be the right option for her and us.
I am constantly amazed and humbled by the goodness of people in our Community.
