Have you shared some time today?

August 6, 2009

Today, an advertising executive, a publisher, a nonprofit communicator and a chamber of commerce leader joined other community volunteers around the table at a local YMCA to share ideas about education and marketing. Like almost 62 million Americans who volunteered in 2008, they were giving their time to an organization they care about.

The result? A lot of learning on all sides, including staff and volunteer “experts.” And a boost for a nonprofit organization that cost nothing but time.

The volunteers gave their knowledge freely, knowing that what helps the YMCA helps so many families and children in our region. What you give to your favorite charity has a similar broad-reaching effect, whether you volunteer at a fund-raising road race or sign up to spend an hour doing an administrative chore, so someone else can do other important work.

As we rejuggle our schedules with the start of the new school year, let’s remember to leave some time for volunteering. We’ll all be the better for it, as individuals and as part of a stronger community.
