Rebecca Ryan optimistic about vitality, possibilities

June 16, 2009

rebeccaonstageIn the month since Rebecca Ryan came to town for the Community Foundation 50th anniversary celebration and annual meeting, she’s been thinking about what she experienced. On Sunday, June 14, she shared her thoughts on the Viewpoint pages of The Birmingham News.

In the crowd of 850 at the annual meeting, she saw people with a “ravenous appetite for positive change; people who seem to love this community and want something better for future generations.”

She praised the investments of the private and philanthropic sectors, including $200 million in grants through the Community Foundation since 1959. She talked about the construction of Railroad Park and a new Children’s Hospital and the grassroots initiative Yes We Can! Birmingham, now part of the Birmingham Board of Education strategic plan.

“To keep your stars and attract the best and brightest,” she said, “you need to give them authentic hope there will be even more opportunities ahead for personal growth, community involvement and recreation. And that their voices will be heard.”

That’s what this blog is all about — so we hope you will respond with your ideas. As Rebecca said, we must “strengthen what already works and open new opportunities for all to enjoy.” What do you think will make this community an even better version of itself in another 50 years? Tell us what you think and back it up with your actions, because your ideas and your participation matter!
