Curbs and gutters mark Ruffner Mountain progress

June 10, 2009

06.04.09 deck off tree top activity room with railRuffner Mountain Nature Center is seeing changes every day, as part of the Three Parks Initiative supported by the Community Foundation. Ruffner Executive Director Kathy Freeland found herself getting excited about the installation of curbs and gutters on June 10, just one more step toward the completion of new facilities at this important park.

Other exterior touches include the crushed brick pathway taking visitors to the trails, lights along the walkway from the parking area and trays of live plants on the roof to help keep it cool and make it beautiful. Volunteers will soon help to develop native plant gardens around the visitor center and pavilion using rocks and boulders uncovered during construction. Contact Kathy if you want to help.

Ruffner Mountain is not just a construction site any more either, with the first summer camp in two years due to start June 22, headquartered in the new education pavilion. Plans still are to open the South East Lake Hiking Trail Access on June 15, but maps are available at the entrance gate off Ruffner Road for use of alternate trail access.

Look for the official grand opening ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 10, This will be a great day for everyone who loves and suppots this unique facility. Just one more thing to brag about in this place we call home.
