Grants to operating funds respond to nonprofit needs

June 4, 2009

The recent round of Community Fund grants from the Community Foundation included $184,700 out of a total $734,200 to support general operations, the daily work of serving so many people in these tough economic times. For the 19 agencies (out of 73 total) that received these grants, the commitment from the Community Foundation represents an understanding of how important it is to make sure this important work continues, even in these uncertain times.

We salute United Way of Central Alabama, which has been for so many years a vital partner in the work of its health and human services agencies. As James McCrary, senior program officer, points out, it is so important to be able to respond in these difficult times, especially when our nonpartners are facing increasing demands for their services and shrinking support from many traditional sources.

With these operating fund grants, we helped organizations such as Kid One Transport, which serves some 16,000 children and expectant mothers by providing transportation to medical care; Pathways, which serves women and children who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, and Safehouse of Shelby County, which serves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children.

How can you help? Check out the full list of our grants and follow your passion. Give of time or money. You can be sure that, whatever you give, it will be appreciated, especially in these hard times.
