Community Foundations grow and give

June 2, 2009

The Foundation Center recently released a new study, Key Facts on Community Foundations, showing that the nation’s community foundations grew in asset size by close to 14 percent and increased giving by over 20 percent between 2006 and 2007. Community foundations increased giving by close to 7 percent between 2007 and 2008. surpassing increases in giving by both independent and company-sponsored foundations.

“Community foundations may fare better than other types of grantmakers, given their large pool of donors and leading role in responding to those affected by the economic crisis,” commented Steven Lawrence, senior research director at the Foundation Center. “But most will have no choice but to pull back on giving in the near term.”

Or contact the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to find out more about how local community foundation assets have been affected (down 20 percent from 2007 to 2008) and what that means for the all-important grants to area nonprofits.

We’re all in this together, because community foundations are supported not just by one single donor, like a private foundation, but by every citizen of the community who cares about making life better today and in the future.
