Video captures 50 years in 5 minutes

May 20, 2009

Give us 5 minutes and we’ll give you 50 years of Community Foundation history, illustrated by the great work of hundreds of area nonprofit organizations.

Filmmaker Mark Hendren put together this videographic representation of our first half century, which was shown at the annual meeting on May 11. It’s a wild ride, thanks to the variety of images showing everything from a YMCA sock hop to the new Downtown YMCA Youth Center, from an old library building to new library resources.

The theme throughout is that these great organizations used grants supported by Community Foundation donors past and present, to make our shared world a better place. Those donors who trusted us with their gifts in the past could not predict the needs of 20, 30 or 40 years later, but their gifts made possible so much that is making greater Birmingham a better place right now.

Thanks to our nonprofit partners and to Birmingham Public Library Archives for the photographs, to Mark for his creativity and to our donors for making this all possible through the Community Foundation.
