Leadership and accountability

April 11, 2009

In Chapter 6 and 7 of “Community,” Peter Block talks about the difference between being a citizen and being a consumer or client, someone who takes no accountability for what is going on in a community.

In this context, the issue of leadership becomes one of engaging citizens in a sense of “communal connectedness” — that we really do choose to be together and to create something together. If there is a community engagement piece, like the Community Conversations in Yes We Can! Birmingham, the involvement of the community cannot end with a plan.

In the reality of YWC!B, the Community Agreement created out of the Community Conversations (representing 2,000 people) has become the voice of the people in strategic planning for the Birmingham Board of Education. YWC!B also has become the driving force behind the Birmingham Education Foundation, as this new organization works to bring the desires of Birmingham’s parents, teachers and community members to reality.

Stay tuned for what comes next.
