A new book by Peter Block talks about how communities work to reach possibilities, rather than overcome problems. Moving from isolation & self-interest (which often create fear) to a sense of connectedness and caring about the whole – that’s a powerful image for what so many communities struggle to do.
Check out “Community: The Structure of Belonging” or follow along as we explore some of the thoughts that may be relevant for what we imagine for a brighter future in greater Birmingham.
Social capital — we worked with Robert Putnam on a national survey that included greater Birmingham. Looking at the bonds that hold close groups together and the bridges that interconnect them.
Peter Block talks about social capital too in this book, and the concern that the high level of connectedness we feel from TV, internet and global information feeds does not really create a sense of belonging. Can we acknowledge our true interdependence, rather than just be overrun with so many thoughts of what’s going on all around us.
I like this quote from the book “Community”: “To belong is to act as an investor, owner and creator of this place.” That sounds like what we’re trying to do with Community Catalyst Funds, and speaks to why this method of pooling ideas and resources resonates with people of all ages and all means.
